Zooming In The EDS 500

On Wednesday, March 22nd, PK zoomed to the finish line as they completed their unit on transportation with the “EDS 500.” The vehicles came in all shapes and sizes. There were cars, boats, trains, and even a T-Rex! The childrens’ imagination and creativity were on full display as they “drove” around The Barton Playground. Thanks to all our parents for making this year’s “EDS 500” a huge success!

Check Out The Experiments Happening In 7th Grade

Karst topography is a landscape formed from the dissolution of soluble rocks such as limestone, dolomite, and gypsum. It is characterized by underground drainage systems with sinkholes and caves. In preparation for their upcoming visit to Mammoth Caves National Park in Kentucky, our 7th grade student scientists have been exploring karst formations and the natural processes that create caves.  Using sugar cubes to simulate soluble rock, students created drainage systems and collected observational data ( in words, drawings, and diagrams) of speleothems that developed.  Mammoth Cave is the longest cave system in the world with over 300 miles of surveyed caves passages and our excited spelunkers will spend a several hours traveling back “in time” seeing dramatic views of stalactites, stalagmites, and all sorts of speleothems.

Mammoth Cave is indeed a scientific treasure chest. In addition to being the world’s longest known cave, it contains a clear and complete record of geomorphic and climatic changes over the past 10 to 20 million years, is said to be the most diverse cave ecosystem in the world and has the greatest variety of sulfate minerals of any cave.

An Act of Kindness From EDS

Nat Lanier, 3rd grade EDS student, made a special masterpiece to deliver to Ivey Coleman. Ivey is a loved member of our community and the mother of former EDS student, Beth Coleman. She is an art teacher who has taught many lessons with EDS students over the years, so this piece of art is something she will always treasure. Nat’s gesture of kindness and creativity touched her life and made her day. Let us all do acts of kindness for one another!

A Tradition Unlike Any Other Here At EDS

The Fourth Grade States Fair has been a traditional EDS event since the early 1990s. Beginning in January students draw for a state and begin the process of researching important information. This project is based on the fourth grade social studies textbook. This U.S. state study is across the curriculum covering not only social studies, but also, math, science, art, music, library, technology, reading, writing, and personal creativity. Once the fair is over the students share their backboard displays and speeches with the rest of their classmates. In this manner the knowledge that has been gained by one is shared with all.
